It is the responsibility of Policy Coordinators to keep abreast of national and international issues of interest and concern to NOFA members; to communicate with the membership though articles in The Natural Farmer and through Updates and Alerts; to coordinate and articulate a unified response by the NOFA community; to recommend actions by the membership and by state chapters; and to maintain an Archive of past policy positions. NOFA follows a Policy Process in arriving at its policy positions.

NOFA is a founding member of the following partner organizations:

• National Organic Coalition (NOC), an alliance of grassroots organic groups and environmental organizations working to provide a “Washington voice” for farmers, ranchers, environmentalists and others involved in organic agriculture
• Domestic Fair Trade Association (DFTA), a collaboration of farmers, farmworkers, food retailers, processors and distributors, non-profits and civil society organizations, formed in response to the growing market for socially responsible goods to campaign for justice in the U.S. food system. The members who represent the full range of the food system, work together to bring the principles of international fair trade to bear on the challenges of local and regional food production in North America.
• National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition (NSAC) (successor to the National Campaign for Sustainable Agriculture), a national alliance of farm, food, conservation, rural and urban organizations that together take common positions on federal agriculture and food policies, and engage and support the broad and vital grassroots efforts across the country to win long-term policy change
• Agricultural Justice Project (AJP), a multi-organizational initiative formed to demonstrate a model of an alternative food system by developing, piloting, and promoting a market-based food label that creates an economic incentive for social equity and just working conditions. AJP represents a collaboration of Rural Advancement Foundation International (RAFI – USA), Comité de Apoyo a los Trabajadores Agrícolas/Farmworker Support Committee (CATA), Northeast Organic Farming Association, Florida Organic Growers/Quality Certification Services (FOG/QCS), and Fundacion RENACE, a Bolivian organic producers’ association.

and a member of:

• North East Sustainable Agriculture Working Group (NESAWG), a network of 60-some agriculture system groups extending from Maryland to Maine working for a sustainable regional food system
• International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM) , working to lead, unite and assist the organic movement in its full diversity

NOFA participates in these organizations through Policy Coordinators’ attendance at their meetings, and through joining with them in their work toward our common purposes.
